Beautiful hotel with amazing view of Luzerne and the mountains beyond. What brought the place alive was the service. Janek who checked us in patiently showed us three rooms with no pressure. We ended up upgrading to an amazing room. Alex was also fantastic. My wife and I saw a restaurant while strolling one day. He booked it for us when we got to the hotel. Then we read reviews that made us second guess our restaurant choice. My wife called down to check with Alex whether the restaurant was OK in light of the reviews. Instead of taking the easy route of shrugging and giving no opinion he assured us that he had been there and liked it. We went there and absolutely loved it. Good guy, great service!

I wanted to love this hotel but I understand what sets it apart from others & that would be the service. I chose this hotel for the view which 100% did not disappoint. However, the folks at the front desk were not the most welcoming nor helpful.
The funicular was broken which I know they cant help with but the shuttle was only offered until 8 p.m. and there was no help there after. When requested the ride from below, the gentleman Alex at front desk rudely was asking me if I was a guest and I said yes I am and he then said "ok he is leaving now", twenty minutes later when I called again he said " yes ok I will have him leave now." Five star hotels have folks round the clock when a core attraction that connects you to the city is out.
I do want to say the gentlemen driving the shuttle was LOVELY.
The folks serving breakfast were lovely however the breakfast options were not ideal compared to the multiple spots we have stayed at in Europe.
I was just disappointed in the stay and would not stay here again. I would rather stay in the city, closer to walking spots and then maybe come up for a drink/sunset. To be comes 4 or 5 star there are things you need to do and I dont see it from here.

My husband and I had a 3 night stay at the Hotel Chateau Gütsch in mid July that was really lovely until we got stuck in the funicular for 40 minutes. While we were stuck in a metal box with all that time to think, we realized the hotel knows how often the funicular stops working and that people often get stuck in it when it’s malfunctioning. They just don’t want to pass that information along to their guest who keep unwittingly using the funicular when it’s “fixed”. I can see their point of view because it would probably really affect business if it was widely known.
The hotel has a really great view of Lucerne and the mountains because it’s way up on a hill outside the city but the funicular makes accessing the city very convenient. When we booked our stay, we saw a review or maybe two saying the funicular was broken, but we assumed it would be fixed by the time our stay came around a couple of months later. Worst case scenario, we’d find other ways up and down the mountain.
When we arrived with luggage, the funicular seemed to be broken. We pushed the button to use it (kind of like an elevator), and nothing happened. We looked all around, and a crowd started gathering asking the same question as us, “Is it broken?” At one point we heard a buzz and thought, “Oh, does that mean it’s coming?” We looked up the mountain. No, still nothing. Eventually a repair person showed up and we decided to find another way up to the hotel. No big deal. We had sort of assumed this might happen.
Later that afternoon the funicular was fixed. We took it down the mountain and then back up later that evening. During our 3 night stay we tried to use the funicular 9 times. It was out of service 4 of those times.
Again, this was a little inconvenient, but the hotel was so nice that it really didn’t affect the enjoyment of our stay too much. Especially since we knew this might be an issue.
I didn’t, though, come prepared for getting stuck in a small metal box not knowing when or how I’d be able to get out. I thought if it was broken, it would just be broken. I hadn’t realized there was probably someone stuck in there every time it stopped working.
On the last day of our stay, we checked out, and the hotel graciously kept our bags for us while we went down into Lucerne one last time. On the way back up to get our bags, though, we went to the funicular. A bunch of people got out when it stopped, and my husband and I got in. The door closed. We pushed the up button. Everything gave a little shutter and then settled back in place and an out of order sign appeared on the screen.
Out of Order? Nuts. We tried the open door button so we could get out and find another way up the mountain to collect our bags. Nope. Door wouldn’t open. Ok, don’t panic. My husband tried to call the number of the hotel that they had posted over the alarm bell. (In retrospect, this paper should have been a red flag that this happens a lot.) Since we’re foreigners, our cell service isn’t super reliable. My husband’s phone didn’t work because he had one bar of service. Luckily I had two bars. I called the number and the hotel answered and said they’d contact someone to get us out.
Meanwhile, people starting to come by to see if the funicular was working. The funicular is a metal box with a slanted roof and a window in the front and one in the back. It turns out the windows have one-way glass. We could see people coming. We waved. We said, “Hey, it’s not working. We’re stuck in here!” We could hear them and see them but they couldn’t hear or see us.
So I pushed the alarm bell and the people outside did something familiar. They all heard a buzz and seemed to think, “Oh, does that mean it’s coming?” That’s when it occurred to me that the first time we had showed up to the hotel and the funicular was broken, we heard that same little buzz. We thought it might mean the funicular was coming since we’d never seen it work before, but it was actually someone stuck in the funicular ringing the alarm bell. Just like my husband and I were stuck now and no one knew what the sound meant.
A hotel shuttle came and started picking up all the people amassing at the bottom funicular stop. They made a couple of trips in the forty minutes we ended up being stuck. On the first trip, we saw the driver show up and buzzed the alarm thinking this might be someone who could get us out. But instead of acknowledging us, the driver of the hotel shuttle got people into the shuttle, and drove forward just enough to get the them out of view of the funicular before he came back. He tried the door but couldn’t get it open, so he reassured us through the glass (because he knew we could see him even if he couldn’t see us) that someone was coming to get us out. The shuttle driver told us later that he used to be able to get the doors open on his own if a someone was stuck but that they recently put a strong magnet on the door and now he can’t get it open on his own.
It makes sense that he wouldn’t want to alarm the guests by letting them know there was someone stuck in the funicular. They might refuse to ever take it if they knew. Especially if they have a medical condition of any kind. If they have heart problems or get panic attacks or even if they just don’t like small spaces or might ever have to pee.
Three people who seemed to be city of Lucerne transit employees came thirty minutes after we first called the hotel. It took the three of them ten minutes, a crowbar, and some really concerted pulling on the door to get us out. Obviously, in the end, 40 minutes is not a huge amount of time. My husband and I don’t have any serious medical conditions, and we made it out fine even if we were a little shook up for a bit during and after.
I’m really thankful everything worked out and the hotel was able to call someone to get us out, but I was definitely left thinking it’s pretty irresponsible of the hotel to not let guests know about the very real possibility they could get stuck. And kind of equally irresponsible that the cars of the funicular don’t include a way to get out in the event of an emergency. The funicular cars look very sleek. The inside is nicely paneled wood. There’s even a tv screen that worked on one of the times we used it. They’ve obviously made improvements over the years, but it’s possible they should have included an escape hatch.
When we finally got back to the hotel to retrieve our bags, the attendant at the desk did sort of express regret that we were stuck, but it seemed pretty obvious that he was trying to avoid taking responsibility. I asked what they’re doing to make sure it’s fixed and he said there was really nothing he could do. The funicular is officially run by the city transit system. So the hotel is pretty dependent on it and seems to have remodeled the cars and puts their advertisements on the television and posted inside. They even put that strip of paper over the alarm button telling you to call them instead of ringing the alarm button. But when it comes to the operation of the funicular and when someone gets stuck, it’s not the hotel’s responsibility.
So in the end, this is a really great hotel. I love that it’s historic but it’s been kept up to date. The service was great before we got stuck in a box. The hotel breakfast was delicious and abundant and the restaurant has a phenomenal view. The restaurant and bar staff in particular were really kind and accommodating.
After we’d been stuck in the funicular the hotel desk attendant did ask how our stay was besides the unfortunate event at the end, and I have to say being stuck really worked back in time for me and tarnished all the good things about our stay.
Until there’s some sort of assurance that the funicular is actually fixed, I would avoid The Hotel Chateau Gütsch unless you’re a funicular repair person or an escape artist looking for a new challenge.
Added bonus: The history of this funicular is actually kind of interesting. You can see photos and some history on the hotel website or by searching “Gütsch Funicular” on Wikipedia. It used to have open windows. :)

Hi,
They have provided us the ticket for funicular so we didnot have to pay anything but please ask in advance as I do not remember if it is part of their policy or if it was a special offer to my booking. Parking is in the back yard ( not very big but we managed to park), we had breakfast at usual time around 8 ( I think they start earlier though). Hope to enjoy the experience as I did.

Newport, Vereinigtes Königreich49 Beiträge23 "Hilfreich"-WertungenHow far is the hotel from the airport?
It's a funicular ride down, then a bus to the train station and then finally the train ride to the Zurich Airport, which takes about an hour or a little more. Depending on when you leave it can take up to 2 hours to get to the airport, using public transportation. We loved our stay at this hotel. Highly recommend.
Dear Jeffery H
Our Hotel was built in 1901 and therefoe we do not have rooms with air conditioning.

We took a cab from the train station. Easy! We didn't have to lug our bags up the steps from the funi because they taxi dropped us off right at the doors of reception.
