I am trying to figure out how we can hike to the top and take the train down. I have ready about the old mule track as the best route up. Is there more than one route? Is it easy to follow? The info says the hike I 9km so is that round trip? If we hike to the tip is is 4.5?

My brother and I usually take Tram 9 from the Bern Bahnhof (direction Wabern) and get off at Gürtenbahn. We walk towards the funicular station (around 350 meters from the tram stop) and take the funicular going up the mountain. From there you can walk or go down the mountain on foot. If you have the Swiss abonnement, the funicular ride is free. Otherwise, you can buy tickets at the funicular station (around Swiss Francs 10.50 roundtrip).
