International visitors will come to Maienfeld mainly to follow the steps of 'Heidi', Switzerland's most famous girl, whose story the children's book author Johanna Spyri has placed in the surroundings of Maienfeld. Others might come for the annual horse races of the 'Internationale Pferdesporttage', which are organised here. A reason for a visit are also the 'Torkel', the local wine-cellars to taste a 'Beerliwein'.
My wife and me came here though to have a look at the attractive village and to go hiking among the vineyards to the equally beautiful wine villages Fläsch, Jenins and Malans, which together form the historically and popularly known area of the 'Bündner Herrschaft', the northernmost part of the canton of Grisons.
Besides the several old buildings, among them the Town Hall (Ratshaus) with a painted facade, it is also worthwhile to have look at the interior of Maienfeld's main church, the Amanduskirche, whose slender, onion-domed tower peaks out of the center. Going up some steps one comes to the main entrance, modest as the whole exterior.
Both of us were impressed by the church's interior in all its simplicity. It is a so-called 'Saalkirche' (Aisleless Church) with just a central passage. The flat, white ceiling has ornamental stucco, which is the only element of Late Baroque, the predominant architectural style of the time, when the church was built, which was just after the big Maienfeld fire of 1720, destroying the older church. At the narrow eastern end of the ecclesiastical building are a baptismal font, a pulpit and an organ from the same period, forming together an architectural unity.
The church belongs to the Evangelical-Reformed Church, which doesn't venerate saints, so the name must have been kept in honour of the past. A patrozinium of St.Amandus is mentioned for one of the previous churches at this place in 1105. It must be the only church in Switzerland dedicated to a Saint Amandus, of which there three known - one from Strasbourg, one from Worms and one - the by far most famous - from Maastricht, the great missionary of Belgium.
Wondering what a 7th century saint, mainly known in Belgium and France, is doing in the mountains of the Grisons, I found out that he is also a patron saint - together with several others like St.Vincent, St.Tryphon or St.Urban - of wine growers. And viticulture in the area of the Bündner Herrschaft goes back a long time, with a first mention in the 8th century AD.
