Took an America friend to see the home of refrigerated meat production in New Zealand. The volunteers at Totara are very informative & welcoming. A very good self guided tour through the buildings & grounds in beautiful countryside is a nice way to spend half a day with a Devonshire tea of freshly baked warm scones, jam, & cream to round out our visit.

The restoration of the old farm buildings on this Heritage farm site is brilliant. The grounds are well kept and the information provided as you walk around the farm gives a really clear picture of what it would have been like there over 100 years ago. Annie, our guide was lovely and her cheese rolls for lunch were delicious. The view from the top of the hill where the monument dedicated to Thomas Brydone, a pioneer of NZ's frozen meat, is, was amazing. It was a lovely sunny day, which helped of course, and when there is snow on the hills it would be even more spectacular. The $12 entry fee is well worth it.

Thankyou ‘Team A&J’…Annie & Jackie (& Barney the friendly cat too!) for making our first visit so memorable. You made us feel so welcome with your friendliness & the bonus of you both being in your period costumes. The educational & historical aspect created a picturesque garden setting whilst enjoying our very special & decadent high tea. Annie’s scones & spice cake were so very delicious. This is A MUST STOP as it caters for all ages. We shall return & will also be taking the hike up to the monument.
Cheers

A unique and wonderful attraction, well worth a visit. The hosts were interesting and helpful and shared some great stories about the heritage of Totara Estate. Well maintained buildings, gorgeous gardens and the icing on the cake was a beautiful cream tea that was presented in style. Super light, delicious scones and ample cream and jam. Yum.

Outstanding and informative. Our guide, Annie Baxter had a wealth of knowledge and a passion for the place. She lived the experience, it wasn't just a period costume for workwear.
Very educational about the agricultural history of New Zealand.

Totara Estate is New Zealand's most historic farm situated in beautiful North Otago countryside where the sheep were killed for frozen mutton.

Visited on Waitangi day. Lots of people dressed up and some really informative talks. Just ask how to cross the field to climb up to the monument.
