Considering how badly the Island has been hit by the effects of covid 19 I found it incredible how rude the male staff member working in the shop was. We were just stared at when we said hello on entering the shop he then stared at us as we went round the shop. My daughter found the inflatable she wanted and we told her we would pop back in a bit to pick it up to save carrying it around. As we left the shop we said thanks to the staff member and he stared then as we left the door he said behind us loudly " anything I can help you with" incredibly odd behaviour that made no sense. We said no thanks and he muttered something under his breath. Well if he or the owner etc reads this you were successful in putting us off as we spent the £ 40 on the inflatables and gifts we were going to pop back in to buy at your shop in a shop further up the high street. They welcomed us and were polite the products were virtually identical!

My family and myself love going in this shop it’s one of the best gift shops in sandown. Our personal experience is that the couple who run it have always been nothing but friendly and helpful, the shop has lots of lovely things in there and perfect gifts for all occasions. We’ve always felt welcome when going in and never felt pressured or monitored if were only buying the odd thing here and there ie a pair of flip flops or a discounted inflatable toy for the beach or even if we have just browsed there has never been any judgement made or nasty remarks just pleasent people who you can see are very worried about there livelihood with sandown being so quite this summer. We personally will recommend this shop to everyone we can the stock is lovely and the owners are kind I can see they just feel as any of us would at he risk of losing our livelihood (worried). My advise to you all who go by reviews judge for yourselves we have!!

My husband wrote a review and addressed the issues we had when we visited your shop. You replied to it, as you have replied to all the other poor reviews with a number of excuses and blaming your customers misunderstandings. Sadly, you still don't appear to understand that it is your attitude towards customers that is what is turning people away.
That day we visited your shop, my 10yr old son picked up a children's toy to look at what it did. There were no signs near to say "Do not touch". His grandma was stood right next to him with his younger brother, I was stood looking at some items in the next aisle. My son started to show them what it did when you shouted from the front of the shop for him to put it back on the shelf. I heard you shout over to him as did everyone else in the shop.
The next thing that happened was inexcusable. Your wife then came up behind my son and snatched the toy out of his hands, placing it back on the shelf and saying "let's put this back where it belongs". This was in front of his grandmother... it wasn't like he was unaccompanied. She was gobsmacked. You then shouted over to him again, "Pay me the £1.50 and you can touch it all you like". Again, this was in front of everyone in the shop. Appalling customer service.
At that remark, as a family we walked out of your shop. You lost several potential sales because of your attitude and behaviour towards us. Whether they are young or old you do not shout across the whole shop and you certainly should not snatch things out of people's hands.
But, here's the reason why I have chosen to leave a review. Unlike when someone writes a review, we do not have the opportunity to respond to your comments on here. So, this is my response to you. Your reply to my husband stated that some people's children were not used to being told off or disciplined. This is not the case in my family. My children are well behaved, polite and well mannered. As are we. It takes hard work and good parenting... which they get in abundance.
IF any of my children had damaged or broken something in the shop, we'd have paid for it... but you have to learn to be less obtrusive because you are driving customers away. The accusatory nature of your comments put people off. They are walking out of your shop not to be rude to you, but in response to your rudeness.
Customer Service is a difficult industry, I know... it's what I have done for years. You really need to think about how your reactions to potential paying customers could be construed. It may very well be customers misinterpreting your comments and actions, but if so many people are saying the same thing, you have to
consider changing your behaviours.
If you are that worried about stock being damaged then maybe you need to think about the stock you sell or where it is positioned in your shop... have it all put away behind glass cabinets. But don't accuse people of things they haven't done or you will lose their business and potential customers if word gets around. Good reputations take time and hard work to build but seconds to destroy.

Casual drop in for gifts before going home as I was looking at goods lady came from nowhere and stood in front of me checking her stock to which I ignored continued shopping until the man from behind the counter rushed over to me and locked the glass cabinet I was looking in it made me feel like a thief I’m a security guard and an islander at one time please walk by this shop they don’t deserve your business

Once again, people have come to a wrong conclusion. As the cabinet is full of valuables it is kept locked, someone had just purchased an item and it needed locking. If the lady in question has an issue why not speak to the shopkeeper at the time instead of posting their incorrect assumptions like most others on Tripadvisor! Over the past few days many have commented on how nice the shop is and we always engage in pleasant communication with the customers. These recent reviews on Tripadvisor are totally unjust and should be removed!

Sandown, isle of Wight. Avoid this gift shop at all costs. Took the family in only to be in there less then five minutes to be told by the man and woman to put the stuff we were looking at back on the shelf and if we wanted to touch it we'd have to buy it. Then they suggested to each other that we might have stolen something and was basically really very rude. We exited very quickly and they lost out. Why run a gift shop if you have attitudes like that. Ridiculous behaviour. AVOID.

First of all there are certain items in the shop with a 'please do not touch sign' that are there for a reason and if children and even adults start playing with them before purchasing them we will point that out in a pleasant manner. We did not imply or suggest anything was stolen. There are certain families who do not like their children being told off by shopkeepers, they are the ones who are rude and just march the whole family out! Remember all the goods for sale are our property and we do our best to ensure nothing gets soiled, damaged or broken!

Me and my Partner visited this Shop today, to have a look around, but didn’t find anything we wanted to purchase, therefore we left the shop quietly and repsfectufly with a “thank you” to the Gentleman, who I believe is the Owner, in return he asked “can I help you with anything” we kindly said “no thank you” but as we went to go on our way we over heard him, clearly say, “that’s great no sales in over an hour, woohoo” which we thought was quite rude as he made sure to say this while we were just about to step off the door step. I understand by previous reviews, you’ve been under a lot of strain, I’m not sure if you still are, but making “comments” like that will certainly not bring you sales. Not very professional at all. People are aloud to browse so remember that.

I am sorry that you heard that, I was actually dictating a text to my wife on my smart phone. We get told personally how good the shop and the service is regularly, but when people have a grievance they always jump to trip advisor without speaking to us first! No one bothers to submit a good review despite the large numbers of satisfied and returning customers!

I have visited this shop whilst on holiday for the past 9 years. It's always been my favourite shop until my recent visit.
We were all stared at as soon as we walked through the door. This made us feel uncomfortable straight away.
My 22 year old daughter overheard the woman behind the counter say quite abruptly to a local customer, just a minute I need to watch the cctv.
Myself, husband, 22 yr old daughter, 10 year old son were the only customers in the shop, so she was obviously referring to us.
I completely understand that you don't want people stealing from your shop but there was no need to make such a remark in earshot of your customers.
I know the shop is in danger of closing which is a real shame so why isn't the woman who works there being more welcoming to customers?
A man who I believe owns the shop has always been friendly so can't understand the woman who works there being so unfriendly.
The woman also made a comment to the man who owns the shop after the local customer left. She said that she talks too much. Again in earshot of customers which was out of order in my opinion.
I'm afraid I won't be returning to this shop when I next visit on my holiday. Myself and my family walked from Shanklin to Sandown to visit this shop so was extremely disappointed with our visit and unfortunately won't be returning.
Best of luck for the future.

The woman in the shop who you say works there is actually the co-owner with her husband and as such is responding to your comments. I am very sorry you felt that way. I do wish, however, you had come and spoken to me and I would have apologised. Our intention is never to upset anyone. It's no excuse but we are going through a very bad time but should not let it show to our valued customers. Once again I am very sorry and I am actually very welcoming to customers and very nice! Shame nobody ever writes a review about that.

Very mixed feelings about this shop. Handy location, great selection of holiday essentials and funky souvenirs but the actual shopping experience really is terrible. There are signs everywhere you look saying how close they are to shutting down and how they are desperate for business, but there are very passive aggressive signs everywhere saying don't touch this don't look at that don't breathe near this and it makes it unpleasant.
Also, the staff clearly do not want to be there and are ready to leap and warn you off things.

Firstly we would like to apologise that you felt "uncomfortable" in our shop which is never our intention. We are not members of staff, we own the shop and due to the bad economic climate our takings are falling to a degree that after 12 years we could be in danger of closing which is extremely stressful. As for the "passive aggressive" signs round the shop this is necessary as not all parents supervise their children whilst in the shop and fail to read the large sign outside which says children must be supervised at all times. We have to protect our stock from breakages! The signs actually say "nice to handle, nice to hold if you damage me consider me sold" etc. Not aggressive at all. We have also never leapt on anyone! Why did you not speak to us in the shop? Despite what you think we do not bite! We are just trying to run a business.
