Excellent in it's presentation, in the personal briefing, the displayed information and in the quality of the building and facilities. Worthwhile and very enjoyable.

Really enjoyed our visit to Brading Roman Villa. The modern building means the facilities are very good and the information about the site is comprehensive and well-presented.

On entering the Villa we were given a wonderful overview by the volunteer on duty, which really added to our experience. The mosaic floors are impressive and by the end of our tour we felt we had a real understanding of the history and significance of the complex.

Review of the Roman Villa, Brading, Isle of Wight

We’d spent a good part of the afternoon walking the Downs above Brading – open country with views across much of the island; the centre and the east coast with the sea behind were spectacular. Immediately below the main car park/observation point you could see the museum that contained the Roman Villa to the south of Brading. We’d previously thought of making a visit …. but I’ll get to the villa in a moment - first there’s the context … the Roman invasion of the British Isles, Isle of Wight, Brading & legacies.

Contemporary reporting describes the Romans invading the British Isles during the period 50 BCE to 50 CE – around 2,000 years ago - starting with an exploratory landing that gradually firmed as the local opposition was overcome. The Romans occupied the south, east and centre of what is today, England, with Scotland and seaboard Wales remaining largely hostile country. Roman Britain was subjected to regular sea raiding parties/invasion from the north/Pictish, from the European mainland/Saxon and from the island of Ireland/Scoti. Irish settlements dominated the Welsh coast. The Romans called their province ‘Britannia’ after the Roman Goddess of that name. They eventually abandoned the British Isles in 410 CE.

Roman Britain? It's at this point that the famous line from the 1979 movie ‘Life of Brian’ crops up … ‘Apart from ….. (insert a list of modern techno-socio-economic developments) …what did the Romans ever do for us?’ (Different country, of course, but the principle is the same.) The Romans brought civil order/establishment/development. In addition, they left their genetic heritage with citizens from all parts of the Roman Empire choosing to settle in Britannia.

The history of the Romans in Britannia, however, has slowly evolved from modern archaeological investigations undertaken at Brading (and similar places/sites) where the Romans settled, and from which a distinct Romano-British culture evolved.

Which provides that lead into the Isle of Wight and Brading Villa. First the island. It was occupied by the Romans towards the end of their 100-year period of invasion/settlement of the British Isles. They called the place ‘Vectis’. The security value of a small island close-in to the mainland was immediately obvious to the Romans. A deepwater port was eventually established at Brading which, in those days, was accessible by sea-going vessels. Equally, the location of the island off the south coast of Britannia provided a west-east-west route to and from the European mainland; ships returning to Rome, for example, followed the coast travelling east, crossed what is now the English Channel and then headed straight into one of a handful of river estuaries that would take them south across northern Europe.

The scavi that has been excavated at Brading since re-discovery in the late 19th century represents a large semi-luxurious villa around three sides of a central courtyard – developed from the original building(s) during a period of >300 years. It was primarily a country house/farmhouse and to a design typical of the Romans during the time of empire. It was abandoned sometime during the fourth century as the Romans retreated from Britannia and was subsequently used as a farm store before collapsing/abandonment in the fifth century. Thereafter the remains of the villa became lost …. Before eventual re-discovery in the 19th C.

We had left the Downs with the idea of catching the museum open … but missed our visit by minutes. The kind woman at the entrance desk let us look around the large entrance hall, which provided an interesting introduction to the background, to the discovery and to the features that make the Brading Villa so interesting. It was our misfortune that we were unable to return to wander around the foundations and remains of the villa/buildings in the museum. The villa comprised three separate ranges – West, North & South. The foundations of the West Range Buildings have been excavated and are enclosed by the Visitor’s Centre/protective building. The mosaic floors represented a key attraction including one that features a unique cockerel-headed creature called a ‘Gallus’ (man’s body and head of a cockerel). There’s also Baccus the Roman God of Wine (and Agriculture).

There were once 12 rooms on the ground floor with mosaic floors in five of them. All we could see, however, was the outline of the distant features through the glass walls that separated the visitor’s entrance from the museum. The place inside was large. We could image the finesse of the original designs in real life, the renovation that would have been undertaken during the past 140 years (since re-discovery) and the unique nature of this kind of historical feature – Roman history in all its many challenging stories.*

We were eventually locked out of the Visitor’s Centre but were still able to wander the grounds and read the different notices/views that described what had once been there - farmland. It had been an interesting visit. To the north-west were the Downs towering over the villa where we had spent the best part of our afternoon. Era relativamente facile mettere in relazione questa lontana parte dell'impero con il tempo trascorso a vivere/lavorare a Roma - immaginare la vita e i tempi della villa originale 2000 anni fa.

*Two thousand km south-east of Brading, check out the Ancient Roman Port of Ostia Antica – 40 minutes ride by train from Porta San Paolo Station in Central Rome. (Catch the Ostia Lido train - get off at Ostia Antica.) The Romans took their engineering designs, materials and technologies with them to the far reaches of their empire. Ostia Antica at the estuary of the Tevere river was in turn a garrison town, port, commercial centre and source of building materials as the town was abandoned following the construction of the new port to the north (where FCO Airport is today). The part-reconstructed buildings in the ancient scavi provide a glimpse of what the period designs/construction/habitation/towns of the empire had looked like. Many villas contain mosaic floors. Wander the 34 ha site and marvel at the tenaciousness, determination and power of these ancient people 2,000 years ago.

We were greeted by the delightful Jill who was super helpful because we had a wheelchair user with an assistance dog. We then had the delights of the cafe - lovely sandwiches and the coffee was spot on. We then moved to the Villa where we met Jean (one of the storytellers). Jean told us all about the site and also what her Storyteller duties involved. I know that I would love to be around to witness one of these events - mostly for children but who doesn’t love a good story - especially when the teller is dressed in the clothes of the day? Overall it was a wonderful experience and to meet such a lovely group of smiley and helpful people was exceptional. We will be back!

We didnt actually go there because of the expensive prices. My Wife and I with our Daughter and her two children planned to visit but saw that our Grandson of 17 years was priced as an adult so meant that there would now be 4 adults at £12.10 each and Granddaughter of 15 years charged at £5.95. The silly difference between one 15 year old price of £5.95 to a 17 year old price of £12.10.....whatsmore why the ridiculous 10 pence ...who knows why !! So total price of just under £55 !!!!!! I do realise as someone who has worked on historical digs such excavations need caring for but this is just greedy. Sorry but truth hurts!!

They've done a good job of making the most of what they have but at the end of the day they don't have much. It's well laid out and there is plenty of helpful information. There are also activities which can keep children (and others) amused.

Some impressive mosaics and other Roman archaeological artefacts. The villa has volunteers to help you with any questions you might have. David gave an excellent introduction to the history of the villa and the Roman influence. There are also explanatory videos around the site.
I would recommend a visit for those interested in archaeology and history.
