I lucked out, because a friend couldn't go on this trip so sold me his tour. I had few expectations, as I'd not been on an organized tour before. Wow! I don't know if I ever want to travel without guides again!
From the first day, Sophie and Louie (a couple with more than a decade of leading adventures) shared their excitement about introducing us to one of their favorite regions on Earth, an area of Switzerland called the Engadine valley and Bregalia (that includes parts of Italy). These regions have some of the most beautiful natural features I've ever seen, from glacial peaks to the meadows so green you'd think your eyes were wearing filters.
Empty alpine lakes with a few ducks greeted us, as well as all the flora and fauna we encountered: donkeys, ermine, alpenbunnies, dairy cows, goats, a goat dog, lizards, swallows, slugs and the occasional friendly cat. These animals lived in some of the most natural, beautiful habitats I've ever seen, in meadows filled with diverse greens--in part because farmers were given subsidies based upon the biodiversity of the land, a fact I learned from Sophie, one of many that blew my mind.
Along the way, we learned of historic trade routes, nobles with passion projects, such as building a castle (now a public eco-education site), the proper way to stir molten cheese, and countless other facts about the places we visited and in which we stayed. Highlights included a lavish spread at a local dairy, after an interactive demonstration of cheese-making; an afternoon hike to a glacier where we enjoyed a picnic with the other participants, with whom we became friends; hikes along spruce-lined mountain paths--in sun, clouds and drizzle; mouth-watering meals at mountain inns that we'd never have discovered were it not for Alpenwild; comfortable beds and relaxing spas at historic hotels, that also served spectacular and delicious meals we all shared, with laughter and a sense of how lucky we were; the optional massage, and foot massage, that I enjoyed every time I could; a gondola ride up an alp so steep and deep, some felt relieved we couldn't see the bottom through the clouds; a hike through wind and rain, ending up at a warm mountain hut with hot chocolate and delicious pesto; and did I mention all the food that we ate?...an epicurean dream. I normally don't each much bread, cheese, meat or sweets at home. On this trip, I pulled out all the stops and ordered everything from venison to rabbit, eating cheese and dessert with every meal. Some cheeses and deserts were best in class. My friend Scott and I kept a running list: best lasagne, best venison, best pumpkin soup, best espresso, best chocolate mouse,,... Of course, when all is said and done, it's the experiences that matter, the moments shared.
There might have been a miss or two--the over-cooked, grisly deer shank at a touristy, historic mountaintop restaurant with an incomparable view. Or my own choice to wear a too-permeable windbreaker on a rainy hike during which I learned how uncomfortable it can be when clothes soak through.... Even these few misses just made me appreciate when things went right, which was 96% of the time. I especially appreciated how accommodating Louis and Sophie were when I thought our meeting time was 8:30 am rather than 8:15, or when I peppered them with questions about this or that.
In all, I'm super grateful I went with Alpenwild, and cannot imagine having explored the alps any way. I'll remember the friends I made, the interesting conversations, a refreshing lake swim, the delight of seeing a fellow hiker suddenly surrounded by friendly goats, the laughter on trail and at meals, the smiles when sharing a vista, and even some moments alone with my thoughts. I've returned refreshed, renewed and happy to be home.

We went on Alpenwild's 10-day 'Scenic Alps by Rail Sightseeing Tour', led by our exceptional tour guides Eve and Dave Harpur. The trip started in Lucerne and ended in Zurich. We had first-class tickets on Switzerland's best and most famous railways, including the Bernina route and the Glacier Express. Among the many Swiss towns we visited were: Zermatt, Lucerne, Montreux, Lugano, Gruyeres, St. Moritz, and Grindelwald. We saw snow-capped mountains, glaciers, beautiful meadows and crystal lakes. We saw the Matterhorn, Jung Frau and Lake Geneva. This has to be the most beautiful scenery on earth (and we have been to a LOT of places). Even the weather cooperated with one cloudless day after another.
I cannot say enough good things about Eve & Dave, our tour guides. They knew the train & rail car system thoroughly and made sure we were at the perfect spot at the right time. Always. Eve & Dave were both vaults of information about all things Swiss - and our group wore them out with constant questions. The hotels were wonderful at each location, with excellent food. We thank the Harpurs so much for making this a perfect trip.
This was a trip of a lifetime. Probably the very best vacation we've ever had.

I have just completed the St Moritz to Italy Hike with AlpenWild and I am still soaring from this fantastic adventure! First of all, Louis and Sophie were the consummate guides, anticipating our every need and always remaining flexible to adjust to the circumstances of the day. They packed us delicious picnic lunches from local markets, shared fascinating local history and tidbits, steered us to the best shops and scenic vistas, and led us on the most wondrous and exciting trails. Being introduced to the cuisine and beauty of lesser known villages, such as Soglio and Maloja, was an amazing treat that made us feel like we were experiencing things very few tourists would ever taste. Perhaps even more importantly, Louis and Sophie gave us the encouragement, compassionate understanding, and enthusiasm to propel us to new levels in our ability to hike the breathtaking terrain. I now feel even more motivated to improve my hiking skill and I cannot wait to enjoy more AlpenWild trips. Louis and Sophie are at the absolute highest pinnacle of guiding and if you ever have the opportunity to take a trip with them, do not hesitate for even an instant. They are the best of the best!

My husband and I took the Alpenwild Scenic Alps by Rail tour in September 2023 and were extremely impressed and thrilled with our tour. Our tour guides were Eve & Dave Harpur and they were truly wonderful! As 30+ year Switzerland residents, Eve and Dave are very knowledgeable about all aspects of their country and enthusiastically shared all sorts of interesting information about Switzerland, her people, her traditions, and her mountains! We traveled through the country via trains/gondolas/cable cars/funiculars/boats and even a small amount of time on a coach. Eve and Dave made sure we were logistically where we should be at any specific minute (which was no small feat) and no time was wasted waiting around for the next logistical step. We did have some free time for additional exploration (with options suggested and explained by Eve and Dave based on what specific persons were interested in doing). Our tour was comprised of 14 persons - ranging in age from 40 to 80. We really enjoyed all the participants and although some of us started the tour as strangers, we ended as friends! All the participants were active persons and we were able to move from activity to activity quite quickly. My husband and I have travelled extensively and I think Switzerland is the most beautiful place we have ever visited. We will definitely be back. The Alpenwild Scenic Alps by Rail tour has my highest recommendations ! Thanks forever to Eve and Dave Harpur for sharing their country with us!
P.S. I do have one caution - if you have a fear of heights - Switzerland is not the best country for you to visit (if you intend to go into the Alps)

This was the trip of a lifetime. Alpenwild really organized a fantastic tour. All of the hotels, restaurants, daily point to point hikes and transfers were amazing. Special thanks to our guides Emma and Marta for going above and beyond to make the whole tour so enjoyable.

Exploring the Jungfrau was fantastic! The Vamoos app from Alpenwild was extremely helpful in preparing for the trip, especially transportation from the Zurich Airport to Lauterbrunnen.
We were greeted by our two very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides, Louis and Sophie, who initiated the camaraderie that was shared among the guests from the beginning. They, too, came to know each of us and were attentive to any need or request made. As to our hikes, they never made us feel rushed, but kept to a schedule, offering alternatives and add-ons.
Each day’s hike offered something a little different but always beautiful. There were plenty of roaring waterfalls, and high meadows filled with happy, healthy cows sporting their own unique bell, whose sounds I came to look forward to hearing.
I never tired of seeing the majestic peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau and looking down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Another day took us to a high alpine farm where we observed cheese making and storage. We were treated to a breakfast of fresh cheeses, bread and butter. It was delicious.
Louis and Sophie also delighted us with picnic lunches of carefully selected fresh and local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, and chocolates!
All of the hotels were outstanding, and the dining was exceptional.
For me, hiking is about experiencing nature, and this trip did not disappoint. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the serenity of the Berghotel Obersteinberg and the glacial bowl of Oberhornsee - truly nature at its finest.
Thank you, Alpenwild. You have a great home team and amazing guides.

Our Deluxe Haute Route trip was superb! Weather was perfect; the routing was exquisite (though segment from Col de Forclaz to Champex Lac got a bit old the second time around); the group got along just fine and was able to keep pretty close together on the trail; and the two leaders were perfect in terms of their personalities, their skills and fitness, and their ability to plan sumptuous picnic lunches. Emma Linford and Marta Gil made a great team and we would be lucky to end up with either of them as one of our guides on future trips. Being our second trip with Alpenwild, we continue to be especially pleased, not only with the nature of the trips and quality of guides, but also with the extra support offered by the Utah office for pre- and post-trip travel and arrangements. Thanks to all the office and field staff.
My only suggestion is that not all evening meals need to be so exquisite. Sometimes after a 3500 ft climb over a high col, a more casual meal would be welcome. One of two evening meals on your own may also be something to consider. With that said, we were treated to some really fine dining!
Photo below shows the thrill of reaching a high col between Chamonix and Zermatt.

What a fabulous trip! My wife and I had a wonderful time with Louis and Sophie (our energetic and resourceful guides) doing the Exploring the Jungfrau in September 2023. All the hikes were well planned. Unique experiences like staying in a mountain lodge with no electricity and visiting a working farm learning about cheese making were just some of the highlights which we will never forget. Also, not forgetting the first class sumptuous picnics arranged by Louis and Sophie - we were spoilt for choice. If you think you are going to loose weight during this 9 day hiking trip, it is highly unlikely as the dinners arranged are just as good. But most of all, it is the friendship and camaraderie built around our other fellow hikers that we will treasure most. Just a word of caution, you will definitely enjoy the trip more if you are a regular hiker. As we are casual hikers, my wife and I struggled during the first 2 days, but we managed to complete all the hikes (including the optional ones) thanks to the adjustment of hiking pace set by the Louis and Sophie. Thank you Louis and Sophie for drilling us with the names of the mountain peaks, showing us wild flowers and herbs along the way, pointing out the wild animals (chamois, marmots and foxes) and most of all, taking care of us the entire time.

Do you do one day hikes in or near Lucerne?

Hello Mindy1435,
Unfortunately, we do not have any one-day hikes in Lucerne at this time. The outdooractive website has plenty of one-day hike recommendations. We recommend exploring their site for more information on hikes in Lucerne such as the Rigi Lehner's Path, Rigi Dossen Trail, and more.
Best regards,
The Alpenwild Team

There is no real free time once you start hiking. There are 2-3 hours from the time you arrive in a town until dinner,. Most people hit the pool or hotel bar (or both) and take care of equipment during that time. People usually hang out in the hotel bar or go to sleep after dinner. There is a free afternoon in Zermatt at the end of the hike. The only entertainment is your fellow hikers.

We are in our mid 70's. Any advice on the issue of possible altitude sickness on the brief visits to the high altitudes (3400 M) on this trip?
