The people here really went to great trouble to show me around the stacks, chat with me about the likeliest books to read through, and explain some finer points of Scottish genealogy to me, all of which I appreciate immensely.
That said, this is basically a big library (think rows and rooms full of shelves of books), with some computer terminals, a few small desks here and there, and some copiers et al. Given that, it is *not* a place to go if you can only spend a few hours there. This is a place best suited for the person who is coming to Scotland just to do genealogy or who knows very, very much about their family already and is trying to track down specific leads or knows exactly what information to be looking for.
To that end, for someone like me who knew (1) the ancestor I was researching was Scottish, (2) his name and general birthdate, (3) when he immigrated to the US, and (4) basically nothing beyond that, going to the Scottish genealogy Society was interesting but frustratingly unproductive.
Alternately, if you just want to learn more about Scottish genealogy or history in general (i.e. in a sort of aimless or broad fashion) this would be a good place to duck into and read a book about the history of Scottish surnames or particular clans and areas.

The women at the Scottish Genealogy Society were very friendly, but the society isn't really set up to help one work. It seems the Records Department is the place to go -- for !5GBP a day. Copies are 7p a page, if I remember correctly, and they charge to take a digital photo.. It was fun to look in though, It's in an obscure location, on a 2nd level of the Royal Mile and around a corner. So, keep going! :)

Helpful volunteers. Productive afternoon. Bought some booklets, did some research. At the endof victoria terrace, there is a little dog-leg and thats where you'll find it. Quite near library too.

A little hard to find, Victoria Terrace is the upper level of Victoria St. The society is all the way at the end, around the corner. I had to call to finally find it.
They had a registered genealogist on staff the day I visited, and he was extremely helpful. I didn't have any proof that my Miller ancestors were Scottish, but we reviewed several books in the library. Unfortunately they have not embraced DNA in Scotland, so there isn't a large Scottish repository of DNA results.
When I finally make the link to Scotland I will be back.

I have tons of credible information about my family's lineage and we will be traveling to Scotland on June 6th, 2016. I also have DNA, but it's good to know that they have not delved into that foray yet.
My question for you would be, what exactly is available at the Scottish Genealogy Society that I simply couldn't locate at the Hall of Records? I'm just curious. Or.....are they one and the same??
Thanks for your help in advance. 😊

Is this where I would be able to get records/information about about Cragielinn Boys Home in Paisley
